āThe Daily 5 + 1
ā
The Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. The Daily 5 is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

āRead to Self
Students each have a book box full of "good fit" books that they read during read to self.

Listen to Reading
Students use Leap Pads, CD players, tape players, and reading websites to learn good examples of literature and fluent reading.

Read To Someone
Reading to someone allows students to practice strategies, work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, and hear their own voice. Students choose Read to Self or Read To Someone.

Work on Writing
Students work on original stories, lists, poems, letters, etc... during work on writing. The writing area is stocked with idea starters, decorative papers, pens, markers, and spelling aides. The best way to become a better writer is to practice. Our class uses the Write From the Beginning curriculum.
Word Work
Students practice letter sounds to build words through hands on activities like Wikki sticks, magnets, stamps, dot markers, and letter cut outs. They also practice sight words through literacy games.
+1 Technology
To make sure students are ready for the 21st century, they explore a variety of learning activities through technology. These activities correlate with the Common Core Standards and include all areas of the kindergarten curriculum.
